Nutritionist lists 5 of the best carbs to eat while trying to lose belly fat

Are carbs the good guys or the bad guys? Nutritionist Cheree Sheldon tells us the 5 best carbs to eat whilst trying to lose belly fat

It’s hard to know with all the conflicting and extreme weight loss diets currently on the market.

Confusingly, we’re told we should avoid them at all costs especially if we are trying to lose belly fat. But you DON’T need to completely ditch them…

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Rice-and-Grains-1.jpg

Why are we told to ditch carbs then?

It is mainly due to the high fibre content of these foods that helps with weight loss and losing belly fat.

Fibre helps in a number of ways, such as keeping you fuller so you tend to eat less calories in total and also taking longer to chew, giving your brain time to get the signal that you have had enough to eat.

The fact is that carbs are the number one source of energy producing foods. Therefore we CANNOT leave them out of our diet.

We need an array of carbs including grains, seeds and vegetables on a day to day basis. Try to consume a small portion of whole grain carbs at each main meal to increase your dietary fibre intake and aid in weight loss.

5 of the best carbs to eat while trying to lose belly fat

1. Brown rice

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

brown-rice-sweet-potatoes-peas-parmesan.jpg

Brown rice is a wholegrain, and more nutritious than white rice as it contains more fibre, B vitamins and minerals such as manganese, selenium and magnesium.

Organic brown rice is especially better for your as its grown without the use of any pesticides or harmful chemicals.  Brown rice retains the bran and has a higher nutritional value than most other rices.

The germ of whole rice also contains phytin, which helps expel toxins from the body.

2. Konjac noodles

A great alternative to wheat pasta and noodles, Konjac is a vegetable and not really even a carb.

Also known as ‘slim pasta’ it is essentially all fibre, therefore contains no fat, no sugar and no carbs. At only 44 kilojoules (6 to 10 calories) per 100 grams, low GI, gluten-free, they really are a god send to ‘dieters’.

3. Organic rolled oats

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Oats-Vanilla-1-1.jpg

Rolled Oats are naturally gluten free, but when cross contaminated with Rye, Barley and Wheat in farming or processing equipment, these grains become a gluten sensitive food.

Rolled oats digest slowly, are packed with fibre and have little impact on your blood sugar. Oats are also a great source of manganese, selenium, vitamin B1, dietary fibre, magnesium, protein and phosphorus.

Oats, thanks to their high fibre profile, are also great for clearing the junk from your digestive system,  including cholesterol, that would otherwise end up in the bloodstream.

They can also help stabilise your blood sugar levels and help prevent type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Look for organic natural oats when selecting the best type.

Check out our delicious recipe for Five Ingredient Oats With Vanilla Cherry Compote here!

4. Quinoa

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

quinoa.jpg

A great alternative to couscous. Quinoa is a seed and is considered a complete protein, because it contains all eight essential amino acids.

Most grains are lacking in at least one amino acid, therefore this makes it a great protein source for vegans or vegetarians.

Quinoa is also being tested in research laboratories as a possible way to curb hunger and alleviate protein malnutrition in underdeveloped countries.

It goes great in salads, soups and stews and is a very stable good fat so you don’t have to worry about keeping it in the fridge.

5. Broccoli

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Broccoli-184137859_725x483.jpeg

A great non-starchy carb, broccoli contains many nutrients such as folate, soluble and insoluble fibre, vitamins C and A, and calcium, which are needed for numerous functions in the body.

Even though Melissa’s weight fluctuates up and down a little she says “I couldn’t care less because this journey is about being happy and if you feel happy in your skin, no matter how much you weigh or what size you are, that’s all that matters. “We are all different and beautiful so don’t be stuck on what scales say all the time.”

Tarryn Eames – 30Kg Lost

Tarryn says:-

  • From 97KGS to 67KGS
  • From a size 18/20 to a size 10/12
  • From lethargic to energetic
  • From miserable to genuinely happy
  • From hating my body to appreciating it.

“At the beginning of my journey,  all I wanted was to lose weight. I never aimed to gain anything. However, all I’ve gained means more to me than the kilos that are now gone and the cms that have disappeared too. Somewhere along the way, I gained the energy to be able to play with my children and the confidence needed to do that in a public setting.

I gained many beautiful and like-minded friends. I gained confidence. I gained strength both physically and mentally. I gained self-love. I gained knowledge about nutrition and exercise. But most importantly I gained happiness.”

NUTRITIONIST REVIEW – MARK SURDUT

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Screen-Shot-2020-10-27-at-3.08.15-pm-782x900.png

I am reminded of something between a quality chocolate/cocoa mix and a super- nutrient powder and it tastes awesome. It really mixes easily, with a remarkable thickness to it too –
almost like a thick shake, just much less sickly sweet. It gets a 9/10 from me.

Now nutritionally it’s a great product. Well balanced, unlike so many diet shakes, this meal replacement drink is nutritionally solid – it’s not radical, it’s not extreme in its mix of macros, it’s BALANCED – it has some carbs, naturally derived from wholesome dairy milk (NO sugar added, NOT in ANY funny form). It has good levels of filling protein and I like that it has a mix of both whey protein and soy protein.

Soy protein is a high biological value (ie. high quality) rapidly-digested protein, with potential roles in reducing risk of heart disease.

How much protein? A made-up shake has the protein load of 3.5 hard boiled eggs!

It has a broad spectrum of micros (vitamins, minerals, trace elements), so it’s really complete and in good doses of them too.

The “sugar” listed in the nutritional panel is naturally occurring cow’s milk carbohydrate, not sucrose or glucose or fructose.

It has enough fibre to match 3.5 cups of raw broccoli, or 2.5 cups of raw green beans.

Then it has another veggie added inside too, tomato, which has a beneficial anti-oxidant called ‘lycopene’ and may protect blokes against prostate cancer and heart disease.

For a real kickstart to weight loss and to your work day, and a boost to your nutrition too, the author suggests blending 2 heaped scoops (40g) of The Healthy Man, 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk and ½ cup of your favourite super-veggies such as celery and cucumber.

Your mates won’t recognise you!

She says “I started The Healthy Mummy a few years ago eating mainly the dinners as I really enjoyed the meals. When my boy was born in last year I wanted to make a change to be fitter and healthier and to show him a healthy way of living, so at the beginning of this year  I started incorporating the snacks and smoothies, then in Feb after having success with these small changes I started following the 28 day challenges an have seen so much success.”

I have had 7 knee surgeries and since losing the weight I have minimal pain in my knee, this has been amazing I have been able to come off the medication for it. I have also noticed that my heart rate is lowering and I have more energy in my everyday life. I have also gained confidence within my self and wearing clothing I would not have before.”

Fiona’s Favourites

“I love the Healthy Mummy smoothies! I love them for a quick and easy breakfast or snacks.

My favourite meal would be the Mexican Lasagne!!!!! My favourite snacks would be Apricot Ball and Chocolate Pretzle Stacks.

Gemma is mum to two kids and lives in Brisbane. She has been following the Healthy Mummy 28 Day Challenges for the last 12 months and has lost 19 kilos and over 90cm from her body

As we head into the end of 2020 – a cray cray strange year for EVERYONE! – I am honoured to be staying on as one of your November Platinum Motivating Mums!!!!

“I am so excited about the Lose 5kg for November Challenge!!! I have never tried a high protein low carb diet before so I am really keen to experiment with some new recipes & see where it takes me!!!”

Gemma’s Favourites

“I LOVE the Healthy Mummy Smoothies!!! My current favourite smoothie recipe is the new Choc-Berry Delight! But I am so excited about the pending release of new flavours in both Premium and Tummy Smoothies!

My fave Healthy Mummy meal is the Sweet Potato and Chicken Massaman Curry (Challenge Recipe) and my fave Healthy Mummy snack is the Superfood Rocky Road!”wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=rocky-road.png

Gemma’s Reasons Why

“To change my lifestyle dramatically I needed a HUGE why! My why is that I want to model healthy behaviours for my kids to copy. While Healthy Mummy is teaching me – I am teaching my kids!”

“I suffer from hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia and PCOS which means my weight loss is slower but I am not letting it stop me from achieving my goals!!! It did take me a long time to get started because I believed the odds were against me – but watching and learning from other Healthy Mummies really inspired and motivated me! So I appreciate this opportunity to pay it forward!

I have gained so many benefits from following the Healthy Mummy and it’s not all weight loss related! The biggest is the increase in my confidence! I have discovered that I don’t need to be at my goal weight to love and accept myself – flaws n all!”

Gemma’s Goals for this Month

“My goal for this month is to challenge myself by completing the NEW 28 Days Stronger Advanced program!!!”

My 3 tips for Mums starting out:

  1. Take your time getting to know how the app works. It is an amazing accountability tool which is like a personal trainer and nutritionist in your pocket! Earning those coins really makes me want to record EVERYTHING (good, bad & ugly)!
  2. Never let a slip-up ruin your day, week or challenge! I have messed up and accidentally eaten 1,000 calories in a meal. Record it – then move on. Don’t punish yourself by eating less or over exercising! It is just not sustainable and can cause more damage than good!
    3. Ask ask ask – we are here to help you! Chances are many others are wondering the same thing! If not, you will get heaps of advice from people who have been there & done that! At least one of those tips will be perfect for you!

Being Platinum

“I LOVE being a Platinum Healthy Mummy! The extra discounts and competitions are great! But I especially love how we get to preview new Healthy Mummy products!

I can’t wait to countdown to Summer with this November Challenge with all of you!!! We have got THIS!!!”

Does keeping a food diary really keep you accountable? These mums set the record straight

Food diaries. We’ve all tried to write down what we are eating in a day at least once in our lifetime. But do they actually keep us aware of what we’re consuming and help with weight loss?

According to these 4 healthy mummies, keeping a visual record of what they are consuming each day keeps them on track with their weight loss or maintenance, motivation, accountability and even mindfulness.

By visually seeing what your day on a plate looks like, you are more inclined to make better decisions. It can also get you into a great routine which in the future can become your normal.

Nikola has lost 17kgs through the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge.

“I find doing a visual food diary keeps me motivated and on track! It keeps me accountable and I can look back and see where I may have gone wrong,” says Nikola.

Even if she goes off track for one meal, Nikola still adds it in, “I like to own it and then move forward! I’m not going to hide the fact or pretend I didn’t eat it!”

Nikola also says that this is a lifestyle change and not a diet! And as one good meal won’t make you “skinny”, one bad meal won’t make you “fat” either.

20 natural foods and products that help blast belly fat

Belly fat is more than a nuisance that makes your clothes feel tight. Having lots of excess fat around the tummy can have health implications and be linked to diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Though losing fat from this area can be difficult, there are several things you can do to reduce excess abdominal fat.

Here are 20 natural foods to help you beat the bloat and blast that unwanted belly fat.

According to several leading health experts, these foods are listed among the top 20 natural products to help you reduce belly fat and bloating.

1.Fennel seeds

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

iStock-516283022-1.jpg

Fennel seeds contain a compound that relaxes GI spasms, allowing gassy cramps to subside and giving you relief from the bloat. You can chew on seeds directly or sip on fennel tea.

Fennel seeds are also meant to be great for controlling bad breath.

2. Cayenne pepper

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

iStock-471445019.jpg

The capsaicin in cayenne pepper reduces gas and bloating because it increases the flow of digestive enzymes through your intestines.

Try this recipe for Spicy Stuffed Capsicum.

Please note: Avoid using if you have gastrointestinal ulcer or gastro-oesophageal reflux. Also, be sure to use cayenne pepper in small amounts, as large doses may cause pain and discomfort.

3. Ginger

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Ginger-for-tummy-fat.jpg

Ginger contains a digestive enzyme called zingibain, which helps the body break down protein.

It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and works wonders on bloat. Sipping on ginger tea before, during, or after a meal will help your body to stimulate saliva, bile, and gastric juices that aid in digestion.

Here’s our delicious recipe for Honey, Lemon And Ginger Chicken Stirfry.

4. Melons

Melons are a natural diuretic and can help to flush excess water and salt from your system as well as act as a natural electrolyte replacement.

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Healthy-Mummy-Nutrition.jpg

Why not add them to your next fruit inspired smoothie?

5. Bananas

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

bananas-1.jpg

Bananas have a high level of potassium, which is a go to nutrient for belly flattening! Potassium also helps to regulate your sodium (salt) intake. Win win win!

Here are 10 banana recipes that aren’t banana bread.

6. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar beats the bloat by keeping your gut bacteria healthy.

If you are going to take it ensure you buy the version that is raw and unfiltered and has the ‘mother’ in it (a stringy mass of yeast and live bacteria left over from the fermenting process).

While the pasteurised and filtered versions may look more attractive, they’ve lost all their nutrient content.

Numerous studies have also shown that acetic acid (the main component of apple cider vinegar) may be beneficial for weight loss or maintenance.

Not sure how to consume apple cider vinegar? You can take this straight or enjoy a small amount (e.g. 1 tablespoon or less) diluted in warm water.

Here’s how apple cider vinegar helps you lose weight.

7. Kiwi fruit

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

iStock-529747431-1.jpg

Kiwi fruit is high in fibre and hydrating so it gives your bowels a good kick start!

A study done by researchers in Pacific Asia found that IBS sufferers who ate two kiwis a day for four weeks had less constipation and overall fewer IBS symptoms than those who didn’t. Add it to your shopping list ladies!

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Supergreen-Smoothie.jpg

Our Supergreen Smoothie recipe contains kiwi fruit. It is high in vitamin C so it will keep you energised all day. A perfect addition to a weight loss diet! See FULL RECIPE here.

8. Lemon

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

lemon.jpg

Lemon is one of the most common diuretics and ways to detox.

Lemon polyphenols (chemicals compounds found abundantly in natural plant food sources, high in antioxidants) have been shown to aid in weight loss and reduce inflammation in the digestive tract, which can relieve the balloon in your belly.

Adding a slice of lemon to a glass of warm water in the morning is a great way to start your day!

Nathalia has a wealth of experience with tips and advice to help you on your fitness journey.

We spoke to Nathalia about all things health and fitness before and after having kids, and what advice she has to keep motivated and strong.

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Nathalia-Melo-lower-body-workout.jpg

As a mum of 2 and former prestigious Olympia competition winner, Nathalia knows everything there is to know about fitness and health for mums. She has graced the covers of Cosmopolitan, HERS and Fitness RX. As a Pre- and Post-Natal Certified Trainer and mother of two, Nathalia knows how to adapt her workouts during every stage of a woman’s life.

Nathalia says, “As a mother of two and someone who is incredibly devoted to this lifestyle not only for our bodies, but also for our minds, I have made it my personal mission to empower and help women to live a fitter and healthier lifestyle in ALL stages of their life!”

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Nathalia_Melo-2048x1365.jpg

Nathalia knows first hand how having kids can impact on a mums fitness.  She says “my fitness has changed a lot since having my kids because I don’t have lots of hours to spend in the gym anymore. I need to be in and out. I need to be efficient. A lot of the workouts that I do in the gym could easily be done at home so I think that making my workouts more time-efficient, more intense and shorter is definitely how it has changed since having my kids.

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Nathalie_Melo-720x900.jpg

Nathalia’s Story and Tips and Advice

When did you become interested in health and fitness?

“I’ve always been into fitness. At 14 I trained and joined a gym. When I had kids it was a different ball game.  After kids, I wanted to make sure what I did was safe and did not harm me long term.  That’s when I started to become interested in doing was safe workouts that were going to give me results.”

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Nathalia_Before_After.jpg

How heavy were you at your heaviest after giving birth and what do you weigh now?

“I gained around 35 kilos after birth, I was around 80 kgs. I now weigh 56 kgs.”

What did you do to get in shape? Can you give details about your weekly exercise regime and diet?

“After I had kids and had the all-clear from the doctor, I started going to the gym three or four times a week. I would drive there and it was an hour round trip. My son was very colicky and had reflux so I would pray he didn’t wake up!   It could take anything from 45 minutes to three and a half hours to get the workout done. But I didn’t give up!  I would sort out the baby and work around him and make a routine.  On the days it was just too hard, I would work out at home but I  stayed consistent. If I couldn’t work out I would go for a walk –  I would do something! I took one day at a time.”

“After my daughter was born, it was just about making time to eat and watching my diet. Just making sure I stopped and sat down to eat. Being prepared by meal prepping helped, so I didn’t just stuff my face with cake!”

What about your routine now?

“My routine now is that I prefer to train at the gym four times a week. I train there because I love the environment. I also do yoga twice a week.

“I also have 3 to 4 family-based meals a day and watch my calories eating clean with good snacks like nuts.”

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Nathalie_Melo1-900x600.jpg

What was a typical day on a plate before you started the weight loss?

“I definitely gained extra weight during pregnancy as I had very bad morning sickness with my daughter so I ate a whole loaf of bread a day which really contributed to weight gain. I also ate a lot of high-calorie food.  With my son  – he was born 10 days early and was in ICU so didn’t care what I ate as I just focused on the baby and was so stressed at the hospital and eating anything.”

“Now, they are older I get through being healthier, not obsessing about food.  My weakness though is ice cream so I try not to keep it in the house! If I want it I buy a smaller portion. I don’t limit myself to what I eat,  cookies,  ice cream, wine it’s all ok in moderation. It’s all about portion control and knowing your weakness.”

What are your top healthy eating tips?

“My idea of healthy is a balanced eating approach.  I don’t like telling people what they should eat Eg carrots and only sweet potatoes!  You will always be exposed to foods; it’s how you accommodate your portions rather than limiting yourself. So have the ice cream – just not every single night.”

What are your top fitness tips?

“Don’t give up!!! Sometimes people have this idea that because they missed one day of training or had one bad moment eg eating the tub of ice cream,  that it’s broken. It’s not. Just dust yourself off and start again. Turn healthy into a habit like brushing your teeth and remember that consistency gives long term success. Everyone is looking for that magic pill and that magic pill is within you!!

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Nathalie_Melo2.jpg

What’s your advice to mums starting out on a journey to better health?

For new mums, if you have just had a baby I encourage you to understand that you must respect your bodies.  It’s easy to compare yourself with others on social media.  Social media is fantastic but can make mums feel they are trying to compete. Take time and understand you have just had a baby.  You will get to your goals so be kind to yourself.”

Top Eating Mistakes To Avoid

carbs.jpg

There are a few eating mistakes that we do knowingly or unknowingly ! I am listing the Top Eating Mistakes To Avoid.

Top-Eating-Mistakes-To-Avoid.jpg

Not caring to read Food Labels

Marketers in the food industry are big liars ! I don’t blame them. After all, its their job to sell whatever the company produces. So they market the product in a healthy sounding way by putting misleading labels. Adding tiny winy healthy ingredient does not make a processed food any better ! Need help in reading food labels ? Read here.

Ignoring raw foods

Nutrition being so simple has become a really complicated matter. People want to eat super foods like quinoa, fancy foods like asparagus. The point I am trying to make here is only eating super foods wont help if you are not eating raw foods like fruits n veggies. Human race was fit when they eat all natural and today we know about obesity and calories, thanks to junk and processed food. If any food item has a long chemical sounding ingredient list, run away from it 😛

Drinking Fruit Juice

Are you drinking fruit juice thinking its healthy ? You would want to give a second thought after reading here.

Not Eating Enough Protein

Protein is the most important nutrient. Out body burns more calories to process protein and hence taking higher protein can help you lose weight. Protein controls appetite and increases fat burning. I will review a protein supplement next month after using it for a few days.

Eating ‘Healthy’ Whole Wheat

Oooh yeah, my favorite point of discusson 😛 . I wana salute to the person who marketed whole wheat, hats off ! Whole Wheat is not always healthy. You may ask why ! Thing is its often accompanied by a lot of unhealthy ingredients. Wheat is digested quickly and can raise blood sugar level. Wheat has gluten which is known to have caused serious diseases and known diseases like cholestrol. I will write more about Gluten sesitivty in the upcoming posts. In short, whole wheat is assumed to be healthiest grain, not true !

Avoiding Fat

ghee-does-not-nake-you-fat.jpg

Fat does not make us Fat. We need good fats to burn the belly fat. If you mother gives you Desi Ghee on your chapattis, please accept. Just make sure that ghee is not burnt, its best form of use is putting in cooked daals and over chapattis or rice. Fats increase the good cholesterol(HDL). Avoid man made fats like trans fats.

Using Artificial Sweeteners

Sucaralose, aspartame, sichhirin – all are BAD. Read the reviews here. Use organic jaggery, stevia, raw honey.

Counting Calories

I don’t deny that calorie counting is not important. But its not at all the only mantra to lose weight. Some people concentrate on portion control and eat right kind of food to lose weight. Some people who can’t eat less have a viable option – reduce sugar and carbd, increase protein and fat without counting calories.

Menopause and Rheumatoid Arthritis haven’t stopped Jules losing 12 kilos and taking back control!

Despite being a healthy weight her whole life, when Mum Jules hit menopause and had to take medication for a Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis, her body started to change. The weight was piling on and even though she tried really hard to lose it with some small success, she would always put the weight back on, and sometimes more.

That was before Jules joined the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge! Six months on she’s lost over 12 kilos and 78 cm from her body. She loves the program so much she’s now become a Lifetime Member!

“I’m so much happier, I love fitting back into my beautiful dresses and clothes and doing lots of things with my grandkids.”

Read about Jules’ story below!

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Jules_Buxton-900x900.jpg

Jules Buxton from Inverell in Northern NSW is 59, retired with three adult sons and six grandchildren.

Jules had been slim all her life. At 160cm tall, when she got married at 19 she weighed 50 kilos, and stayed between 50 and 60 kilos for most of her adult life.

‘Hitting Menopause’

Julie’s weight started to change in her late 40’s early 50’s. Not only did she hit menopause, but she was also diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes pain and swelling to the joints.

Jules shares, “I went on many different medications, HRT, methotrexate, lyrica, prednisone and plaquinil are some of them and I stacked the weight on. I got up to 75 kilos and I struggled to lose it as it became harder and harder to lose weight the older I got.”

Despite several attempts to lose weight for special occasions, the weight would always pile back on and often with a little bit more added.

This year Jules weight had reached 70 kilos again and she was fed up with her bloated tummy. She had stopped taking medication for her Rhuemathroid Arthritis due to the side effects which meant that she was in a lot of pain from flare-ups.

Jules says “Six months ago I broke down and cried after my Rheumatologist had told me I was going back on new meds and it would be for life. I did not want to keep getting bigger and even more unhealthier so that very moment I joined The Healthy Mummy and I haven’t looked back.”

Weight Loss Results – 12 kilos and 78cm in 6 months

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Jules_Buxton2-600x900.jpeg

“I’ve just finished six months of the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenges and I have lost 12 kilos and 78cm all over! I feel so much better, my tummy has gone down and even though I am dealing with the RA daily and the side effects of my medication I am coping better.

I’m so much happier, I love fitting back into my beautiful dresses and clothes and doing lots of things with my grandkids.”

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Jules_Buxton1-900x900.jpg

Being on different medications for her Rheumathroid Arthritis has caused challenges for Jules with different side effects.

“I have good days and bad days, every day I try to walk up and down my driveway, do stretches and leg kicks in my spa and sometimes a weights workout from the Healthy Mummy App.”wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Jules_Buxton_BA-900x900.jpg

‘Loving the Healthy Mummy Smoothies’

“I love love love the smoothies! I have a different one from the app every day for breakfast my favourite flavours are the Tummy, the 45+ and Espresso Smoothies and I make all my smoothies with these as a base.”

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Tummy-900x600.jpeg

Jules Favourites

Snacks

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Jules_Buxton_snacks-900x900.jpeg

“I like simple easy to prepare snacks so my morning and afternoon snacks are usually crackers and low-fat cheese with tomatoes and cucumbers or rice or corn thins with tomato or peanut or almond butter and banana, nuts and fruit and veggie sticks.”

Lunch

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Ricotta_rolls_Jules_Buxton-888x900.jpeg“Lunch is sometimes a smoothie or a wrap or crackers, a salad with tuna or chicken or leftovers from our dinners.”

“I like something small and sweet after dinner sometimes like dark chocolate and herbal tea with honey, simple snickers cups, caramel cheesecake bliss balls, fruit nut seed choc bites, choc tahini slice and for special desserts the mini salted caramel cheesecakes and mini triple chocolate cheesecakes are so yummy.”

Dinner

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Stove_top_Lasagne-900x694.jpeg

“I love all the dinners and my husband eats what I have most nights”

Some of my favourites are:-

“Oh I just love everything and I like to try new recipes every week as much as I can”

Jules has also embraced some of the 500 workouts in the Healthy Mummy App, her favourites are Fit Beginner, Total body with weights, express boxing and intense HIIT .

Becoming a Lifetime Member!

Jules is so happy with the program that last month she switched to become a lifetime member!

Jules 3 tips for other mums

  1. Make the decision in your mind to be healthier and fitter and stick to it. Don’t listen to anyone who is negative about your journey, it’s your life your body your health.
  2. Be prepared with your food, grocery shopping lists and meal prep are very helpful, track everything you eat and drink every day, stick to your calories but don’t beat yourself up if you’ve had a blowout or a treat as tomorrow is a new day and you can make up for it but don’t do it every day if you can help it.
  3. Move your body every day if you can, just go for a walk or do some stretches or some lightweight exercises, try a new workout from the Heathy Mummpy App, something is better than nothing but if you need to rest listen to your body and do something gentle.

“Be gentle on yourself! If you think you have failed get up and try again the next day. Be motivated and push yourself when you need it. Your health is the most important thing you have so take care of yourself first.”

Wise words Jules!! Thank you for sharing your fantastic success with us!!

17 Scientifically Backed Ways To Lose Belly Fat

Belly fat is more than just an unsightly inconvenience. It’s also a serious health threat.

But GOOD NEWS is that we have helped 100,000’s of mums shed their belly fat and we can help you too!

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

belly-blaster.jpg

There are two main types of stomach fat…

1. Subcutaneous fat

For new mums, subcutaneous fat is the most noticeable type of fat on the stomach. As the name suggests, subcutaneous fat is the sort of fat which lies just under the surface of the skin.

Women are most likely to accumulate this sort of fat around their abdomen, hips and buttocks. Subcutaneous fat is noticeable and can cause dimpling like cellulite.

This fat serves as the body’s energy storage system. If more calories are consumed than the body uses, extra calories are laid down as subcutaneous fat.

When more calories are burned than consumed, subcutaneous fat is the first sort of fat to be burned off by the body to meet the increased demands for energy.

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Different-Types-Of-Stomach-Fats-And-How-To-Lose-It1.jpg

2. Visceral fat (the dangerous one)

The second type of fat on the stomach area is visceral fat, also known as abdominal fat. This sort of fat differs from subcutaneous fat as it is less visible within the body.

Visceral fat forms within the body and around the organs. It cannot be seen from the outside and is far more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Research is continuing into why some people seem to have greater amounts of visceral fat than others, but it is believed to have a lot to do with a poor diet.

Visceral fat is of great concern as it literally wraps itself around the major organs in the abdomen such as liver, kidneys, heart and lungs, as well as contributing to the clogging of arteries.

People will high levels of visceral fat are more prone to developing serious health issues such as heart disease. Visceral fat often accumulates around the liver and this leads the liver to become resistant to the body’s insulin, which in turn greatly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Visceral fat is often referred to by the medical profession as a ticking time bomb as many people are unaware that they have visceral fat and it cannot be seen accumulating as subcutaneous fat can.

Risk factors for developing visceral fat

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Untitled-design-31.jpg

There are several factors which make it more likely that visceral fat will develop.

These include:

  • Smoking
  • Heavy drinking
  • Living a non-active lifestyle
  • Eating a diet which is high in fat
  • High levels of stress

Here are 17 effective tips to lose belly fat

1. Eat lots of soluble fibre

Soluble fibre absorbs water and forms a gel that helps slow down food as it passes through your digestive system.

Studies show that this type of fibre promotes weight loss by helping you feel full, so you naturally eat less. Also, soluble fibre may help fight belly fat.

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=Control-x-733x900.png

2. Avoid foods that contain trans fats

They’re found in some spreads and also often added to packaged foods, but many food producers have stopped using them.

These fats have been linked to inflammation, heart disease, insulin resistance, and abdominal fat gain.

3. Don’t drink too much alcohol

Research suggests that too much alcohol can also make you at more risk of gaining tummy fat.

Cutting back on alcohol may help reduce your waist size. You don’t need to give it up altogether, but limiting the amount you drink in a single day can help.

4. Reduce your stress levels

Stress can make you gain belly fat by triggering the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, which is also known as the stress hormone.

Women who already have a large waist tend to produce more cortisol in response to stress.

Try our meditation sessions in The Healthy Mummy app

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

mindpower-2-900x900.jpg

5. Eat a high protein diet

Protein is an extremely important nutrient for weight management.

High protein intake increases the release of the fullness hormone.

Protein also raises your metabolic rate and helps you to retain muscle mass during weight loss.

6. Don’t eat a lot of sugary foods

Sugar contains fructose, which has been linked to several chronic diseases when consumed in excess and has been linked to extra tummy fat.

Good news all our Healthy Mummy Smoothies have NO added sugar

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Premium_Smoothies11-900x869.jpeg

7. Do cardio exercise

Cardio is an effective way to improve your health.

Studies also show that it’s one of the most effective forms of exercise for reducing belly fat.

Good news – we have over 350 cardio workouts in The Healthy Mummy App

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Nathalia-w-mums-900x600.jpg

8. Cut back on carbs — especially refined carbs

Reducing your carb intake can be very beneficial for losing fat, including abdominal fat.

You don’t have to follow a strict low carb diet. Some research suggests that simply replacing refined carbs may improve metabolic health and reduce belly fat.

9. Perform resistance training (lift weights)

Resistance training, also known as weight lifting or strength training, is important for preserving and gaining muscle mass.

Good news we have lots of weights based programs in The Healthy Mummy App

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Natalie_Melo-900x882.jpg

10. Get plenty of sleep

Sleep is important for many parts of your health, including your weight. Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep tend to gain more weight, which may include belly fat.

11. Track your food intake and exercise

Many things can help you lose weight and belly fat, but consuming fewer calories than your body needs for weight maintenance is key.

Keeping a food diary or using an online food tracker or The Healthy Mummy app can help you monitor your calorie intake.

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

app-675x900.png

12. Eat fatty fish every week

They’re rich in high quality protein and omega-3 fats that protect you from disease.

Some evidence suggests that these omega-3 fats may also help reduce visceral fat.

13. Stop drinking sugary fruit juice

Although fruit juice provides vitamins and minerals, it’s high in sugar.

Drinking large amounts may carry the same risk for abdominal fat gain.

14. Take apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has impressive health benefits, including lowering blood sugar levels.

It contains acetic acid, which has been shown to reduce abdominal fat storage in several animal studies.

You can also check out our High Strength Apple Cider Vinegar Tablets here

wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=

Apple-Cider-Vinegar-.jpg

15. Eat probiotic foods or take a probiotic supplement

Probiotics are bacteria found in some foods and supplements. They have many health benefits, including helping improve gut health and enhancing immune function.

Researchers have found that different types of bacteria play a role in weight regulation and that having the right balance can help with weight loss, including loss of belly fat.

And good news is we have probiotics in our Tummy Smoothie.

16 Drink green tea

It contains caffeine and the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), both of which appear to boost metabolism.

EGCG is a catechin, which several studies suggest may help you lose belly fat. The effect may be strengthened when green tea consumption is combined with exercise.

I’m so excited I can fit into my jeans again!” says mum who’s lost 6kgs in 7 weeks!

There can be lots of different reasons why mums want to lose weight. For some, it’s just about improving their health and fitness.

For many, it’s simply because they feel unhappy with their post-baby body. This was the case for mum Melissa, who at 11 weeks postpartum with her 5th baby, decided to take some control determined to get back the body she was comfortable with.

Just 7 weeks after joining the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge, Melissa has lost 6 kilos and is well on her way to getting back her body confidence.

Melissa’s Story

Melissa is 33 with four children, aged between 12 years old and a 19 week old baby. She also has an angel baby who was born at 35 weeks old and who is forever 8 hours old.

For Melissa, there wasn’t really a defining moment for wanting to lose weight. With five pregnancy’s in 12 years, Melissa’s body had gone through many changes.

She says “I was pregnant for basically four years straight and I was very unhappy with my body. I’ve always been a slim person until I had my babies and was in the best shape of my life about three years before my 3 year old was born.”

“I’m determined to get back into shape again!”

As part of that determination, Melissa joined the Healthy Mummy’s 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge and is already seeing the results.

So far I have lost about 6kg. I’m down to 68.4kg in just 7 weeks ”

Melissa’s Day on a Plate

For snacks I have an orange or some berries.

My fave Healthy Mummy meal is definitely the sausage rolls.”

She says “I LOVE the HIIT workouts with Wendy on the Healthy Mummy app!! They are my favourite!!

Melissa’s three tips for Success:

  1. Consistency!
  2. A workout buddy!
  3. And a good positive mindset!
